From 1840 to 1920 Matchstick Safes were being made and collected by many. Their function was to hold matches that could be struck along the bottom of the safe to light cigars and cigarettes. These safes would be kept in women's purses and men's slacks or vest pockets. Most all of these safes still remaining have monograms.
This particular small safe has a spray of flowers on the front and is plain on the back. It is sterling silver and has a nice patina that shows the authenticity of of its age. Two sterling loops have been added to allow for the chain, making this piece into a beautiful necklace. The chain is antique silver ox with a rope design on each link. Four rhinestone rondel embellishments and a brass leaf adorn the chain as well. Inside the safe is a thin card that says '1840-1920, Matchstick Safe.' also inside are matches i've included for looks. Newer matches will not strike on the strike plate. See photos for lengths of necklace when long and when doubled as well as the size of the safe itself.
